The Right Fats to Prevent Fat Kids!

Good Fats for Healthy Kids!

Pregnant women who intake adequate amounts of Omega-3 supplement give birth to children who are much less likely to become obese or overweight.  Studies also show it will aid in better brain development.

Emily Oken, ME, MPH, of the Harvard Medical School and her colleagues investigated whether the ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fats in pregnant women had any influence on the risk of obesity in their children.

Omega-6 fats are generally found in most cooking oils and processed foods (Standard American Diet)  Omega-3 fats are found in cold-water fish (such as salmon), flaxseed oil, fish oil and grass-fed beef.

The women who consumed a higher ratio of Omega-6 fats (processed food and cooking oils) were more likely to have an obese child by the age of 3.  In contrast, women who consumed ample amounts of Omega-3 fats were 32 percent less likely to have an obese child at age three.

Only about 1 in 5 women (20 percent) consumed two or more meal/week containing fish (Omega-3).

If you are pregnant, wanting to get pregnant (or want healthy hormones in general or deal with any personal weight issues) – – eat your fish (salmon), eat grassfed beef and take Omega-3 supplementation.

My personal favorite is the Barlean’s Swirl product.  It is emulsified and therefore five times easier for the body to assimilate.  It comes in several formulas and flavors.  It is great for mom and kids after about age 2.    You can find these products in your local health food store or by visiting our website at www.lifestyleforhealth.com.
