Epson salt baths are one of my favorite ‘soaks’ of all times. Epsom salts are not actually salts but a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate.
Magnesium helps keep enzyme activity regular and help many bodily functions run smoothly. It is estimated that half of the American population is deficient in magnesium (magnesium reserves are ‘burned up’ under stress). Sulfate plays a role in the formation of brain tissue and joint proteins and can strengthen the walls of the digestive tract.
Since magnesium and sulfate are easily absorbed through the skin, an Epsom Salt Bath can be an easy, inexpensive way to restore magnesium and sulfate levels in the body.

- relaxing nervous tension
- supporting the healing of skin issues
- soothing back pain and aching joints
- ease muscle strain and fatigue
- healing cuts
- reducing congestion
- reduction of inflammation (join pain)
- flushing of toxins
- easing migraine pain
How do you do an Epsom Salt Bath?
Salt bath can be done 2-4 times a week. Start with 2 cups of Epsom salts to a warm (not hot) bath and soak for at least 12 minutes. If you would like to further support the skin, add ½ cup of olive oil or melted coconut oil to the tub. Do not use soap as it interferes with the action of the salts. Resting for a couple hours after the bath is helpful (or just do before going to bed for the night).
As a footbath, use ½ cup of Epsom salts to a basin/tub of warm water. Relax and soak for 20 minutes. Dry feet and moisturize with coconut oil with a few drops of peppermint essential oil.
Despite the benefits, Epsom salt baths aren’t for everyone. They generally aren’t recommended for people who have conditions such as heart problems, high blood pressure or diabetes.
