It is estimated that 80% of all Americans suffer from low back pain at some point in time.  In fact, it is the most common reason for missed work.  And yet, most people simply try to manage the pain instead of discovering what is leading to the pain.

The back is a complicated structure of bones, joints, ligaments and muscles. Back pain can come from ligament sprains, strained muscles, ruptured disks, and irritated joints.does your back hurt  While sports injuries or accidents can cause back pain, sometimes the simplest of movements—for example, picking up a pencil from the floor— can have painful results. In addition, arthritis, poor posture, obesity, emotional stress and psychological stress can cause or complicate back pain.

Tips to Support Your Back

  • Maintain a healthy diet and weight.
  • Move – – be active!
  • Be sure to get adequate, clean, easily assimilated protein to support muscles and spine.
  • Develop your range of motion along with strength building.
  • Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest.
  • Stretch before and after workouts (even gardening)
  • Develop good posture
  • Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
  • Sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimize any curve in your spine.
  • Lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist when lifting.
  • Learn to hinge from your hips instead of from the spine.
